I already have a 2yr old collie and we’re looking to meet with a potentioal new dog this weekend. the other dog is femle 1yrs and has been rescued. The lady we are getting her rom says shes very affectionate which sounds just like our dog, and as shes a female I think it would be easier. Is there anything I can do to make the move easy on both? Well when you bring the new dog home have your other dog tied up and keep a a distance between them.
If no aggression is shown then bring them closer and just let them sniff each other for awhile.
maybe take them both on a walk for a bit to wear off some energy and to bond.
Meet out on neutral ground somewhere.
You know your dog and what he is like when meeting other dogs out and so try to treat it as if you were doing just that. Don’t make a big deal out of it. Then go for a walk together for 10 minutes and see how they interact.
Then bring them back into your garden together.
I brought 12 fosters into my home within the last year and have brought many other rescues/boarders through the gates as well.
If you tie your dog up as the poster above suggests then your dog will resent another in the garden and you could make it a whole heap worse.
only thing i can suggest is take them for a long walk together to get to know each other, dogs can be very territorial give them that chance before you take them home together.. i mean a good walk to tier them out. hope this helps, its what i do, seems to work
Introduce them at the park or the beach or something, and let them hang out and play for half an hour or so, then bring them both home. Your Shep will find it a bit odd having to share your attention and that, but she’ll get used to it.
it is best to let the dogs meet on neutral territory and take them for a walk to see how they get on
well introduce them slowly by having them tied up then let them wonder about together.
