Memphis Belle ~ Tori Out About asked:
Isn’t it important to respect a person’s right to choose the dog that they want to fit their lifestyle and family at a particular point in time without making them feel guilty if they want a pedigree dog and not a rescue dog?
Isn’t it important to respect a person’s right to choose the dog that they want to fit their lifestyle and family at a particular point in time without making them feel guilty if they want a pedigree dog and not a rescue dog?
My breed of choice is the Dobermann, because a Dobe who is respected as a valued member of the pack, and who is able to respect its owner, is a wonderful asset to the pack, and will look after the family with its life.

I’m not against purchasing a dog from a reputable breeder. However, I strongly believe that one should look through rescues and shelters first. Dobie’s are amazing dogs, one of my favorites, and I think some mixes are just as ‘good’ as the purebred. I think if you have no luck in shelters and such, you can track down a good breeder and get a puppy from them.
I couldn’t agree more.
You have to like the dog you own as it is with you for life.
It’s a bit like choosing a partner!
Not here on YA it’s not. Here every dog needs to live and every dog at the pound needs to be rescued and all purebred dogs are the devil according to most people.
Here, unless you own a mutt that you got from the pound you are an evil person and you will get 27 million thumbs down if you stand and defend buying a dog from a breeder.
Hope I helped!!
ADD: Bingo…am I good or what???
No i would rescue a dog, they get put down after so long of being in the kenels, and some of them have had bag lives.
i rescued my dog, he was beaten as a puppy and trained by racists, and gets scared sometime even tho its been 10 years, you should atleast consider a rescue dog and go an look at one before choosing a pedigree dog because you could find one there and save yourself money aswell.
I enjoy purebred dogs. My family has had 3 dogs and 2 out of the 3 were from the pound/shelter. The first one was such a good dog (picked him from the pound when he was 3-4 weeks old), our second is the reason I do not like to get from the pound she was 3 years old when we got her and had no training and it was an awful experience. Now we have a purebred golden and I am getting a purebred solid black GSD in 6 weeks. I do not see that my dogs are better than any other ones, it is just my preference and you can not make me feel bad about it lol.
The choice is yours to make. Rescue dogs are great but if you want a Dobe and you can not find one at a rescue center than go for the (good) breeder. You may want to check on line there may be Dobe rescues that you could get one from.
Don’t feel bad if you don’t get one from a rescue.
I agree with you a 100% but you also have to see why people tell them to go to spca or a rescue. there are far to many dogs in pounds and spca’s around the country. i have two fav breeds and that is shih tzus for the great personality and apbt for there loyalty, personality and so much more to love about these 2 breeds.
Exactly.
Every question I answer saying that I bought a dog I always get thumbs down.
When I get a dog, I want a clean slate. No previous abuse, malnourishment, ect..I also like the security I get with a purebred dog. You can’t read up on a mixed breed.
I looked for a Pug in a rescue. There were a few, but most were special needs. I don’t have the money or time to spend on a dog that has to have super special care.
I really agree that choosing a particular dog is the right of the potential owner. What is important, is to look at it from the dog’s point of view as well. You need to look at what you can offer a dog – do you have space for a large dog, somewhere nearby to walk the dog and have you looked at the expense of feeding and caring for a large dog? If you would like more on Choosing a Puppy have at look at my website….
Your Dogs.
I agree that it’s a personal choice and that there are valid reasons for wanting to get a dog from a breeder, such as wanting a dog guaranteed to perform a specific job or have a particular temperment, wanting a dog with a known background, or because you’re looking to show. I would prefer that people only buy purebreds from breeders for good reasons, but I do realize that it’s a personal choice and I won’t chew people out for their decision. All of my dogs have been from shelters because I don’t feel I need to own a pedigreed dog and I know rescue dogs can make wonderful, loving companions. That’s my choice, but I know it’s not everybody’s.
The people I am going to chew out are those who try to tell me how clever they are for shelling out hundreds of dollars for a designer mutt or a pup from a pet store or bad breeder, or the people who are asking breeding questions here which either should be answered by an experienced breeder mentor or make it abundantly clear that this person should never be breeding dogs. You can choose to rescue or buy from a responsible breeder, but there’s no excuse for being irresponsible and supporting the people who contribute to pet overpopulation.
You can go with a pedigree Doberman but there are some Dobermans that may have been left in rescue centers that may be just as good as the pedigrees and were left due to their owner moving away and the owner not being able to bring them along.
i agree with you 100%, it is your choice. the main reason why i bough from the breeder was because i needed a dog with very stable temperament (as i am planning to start a family) and dog that has been health tested.
My breed of choice is also Doberman, and unfortunately unless you know the history of the line it is very hard to tell what you are actually getting.
There is absolutly nothing wrong with buying a registered dog. As long as you do the research on the dog and the breeder. I do however firming believe in breed rescue.
Yep, if someone has a certain breed they love then why shouldn’t they get one from a respectable breeder. Those wanting to buy ‘designer’ dogs – from ‘breeders’ – though should not have a right to decide the breed they want.
Purebred from a breeder, shelter or breed rescue and mixed breeds from shelters only.
I think it is people choce to get wat they want…HOwever I do feel it is importanty to let people know- they can resue a pure bred- there are lots of pure bred rescues out there and they don’t need to buy from a breeder- But I have one of each (Rescue and one from a breeder)And I love them both
You should choose whatever dog you want.
I will be buying a pedigree dog…
There is nothing wrong with getting what you want when you will be paying for it – just as long as you are supporting the breed when buying a pedigree by buying from people who work their dogs and breed quality animals.
If you just buy a pedigree from a backyard breeder, then shame on you.
As for rescue dogs, it is all you people who breed mongrels or pedigrees that you don’t show or works fault that they are there! Not the people who do not want a rescue.
If you do not enhance a breed by breeding your dogs, or if you cannot be bothered to show and work your dogs which is what they are intended for – then you should not breed.
Its disgusting to breed animals of poor quality when there are rescues around.
I adopt rescue dogs because they get put to sleep fast. If you want to go to shows adopt a pedigreed. They’re much more money. They are purebreds though. Rescue dogs are cheaper.
I know we really should consider a rescue dog first, but unfortunately…..in many cases, you can find yourself taking on someone elses ‘problem’. I have three pedigree German Shorthaired Pointers…but I do also make regular contributions to the RSPCA, and to my local Dogstrust
No-one should feel pressurised into taking on a rescue dog. You do what you feel is right for you.
You shouldn’t get too much flack for buying a pup from a serious breeder.
Where most of the people here have a problem is with all the designer puppy mill and back yard bred dogs. The animal shelters are overflowing with perfectly good dogs that will be put to sleep today – due to over breeding and not enough homes.
There are dobie rescues where you can adopt a full-blood pedigreed many times AKC registered dobie. If you do not intend to show the dog in conformation in the shows, then the fact that the dogs already come spayed or neutered shouldn’t be a problem.
I have two rescued Greyhounds that came with a pedigree and long race record. I have never had anyone give me any flack for adopting (or doing rescue work) on these pedigreed and purebred dogs.
I totally agree. If I were to get a dog now I PERSONALLY would get a rescue pup but in the future when I have children we are going to get a Labrador puppy from a reputable breeder. Rescue dogs are not right for everyone. You should get the dog that’s perfect for you, and dobes are such lovely dogs. On YA people who would like pedigree cats and dogs seem to be the devil personified, this is wrong. Everyone should have the right to choose either a pedigree of rescue without being made to feel guilty x x x
ADD I will say I am totally against ‘backyard’ breeders. People who breed for the money not for the love of the breed. I am also against all these ‘teacup’ and ‘designer’ dogs like labradoodles, maltipoos etc.
Rescuing is saving a life, but on the other hand, you want to pick the dog.
If you can rescue please do so! but if you want a pedigree dog, of course its your choice, i looked at the shelters, i feel sorry for all the dogs, but none of them matched me. so i bought my dog from a breeder.
Check your pound/shelter first if you can’t find any thats for you then go for the breeder option.
I see nothing wrong with buying a purebred dog from a reputable breeder. It’s personal choice, and rescue/shelter dogs aren’t for everyone. No one has the right to point fingers and call a person bad for not adopting, but I do see it alot on here..
I’ve adopted before, then when I had the room and time, I bought two pure bred collies. Why? because they are my dream dogs, and fit my life style to a T.
Do I feel guilty because two shelter dogs may have died because of my decision? Nope..put the blame where it belongs..on the idiot owners who allow their dogs to breed…
I believe that a reputable breeder, a breed rescue group, and an animal shelter are all acceptable places to get a dog.
Different people are looking for different qualities in a dog. Some just want a pet, some want a dog for conformation showing, some want a dog with working ability, some want a certain set of characteristics all found within a certain breed of dog, etc.. Depending on what the person wants, a breeder may be a better choice than a rescue group.
.
Lots of Dobies end up in rescue. Many of them are wonderful dogs with lovely temperaments. Some good with kids, other dogs, kids etc.
While so many dogs are being killed because they can’t find a home, I believe it is wrong to support the breeding of more.
The term reputable breeder gets thrown around. How many breeders out there are ethical, they might be considered reputable. but there’s a big difference between reputable and ethical.
What a breeder says they do isn’t always the same thing in reality.
of course you have the right to choose a dog which fits into your lifestyle and family and no one has the right to make you feel guilty.
I have seen some lovely dobermanns in rescue though and I am sure that you would have been able to give one of these a wonderful home.
my friend also had a first cross dobe who was the most wonderful dog he had all the qualities of the breed but obviously looked like a cross (but still mistaken by people not as familiar to the breed as a dobe)
Sometimes you have to search for the rescue dog of a specific breed
As a dobermann lover I am sure you would find it hard not to give one who ended up in rescue through no fault of its own a home if your circumstances permitted.
People should seriously consider what breed they are taking on as when they do not it ends up in rescue or worse and these dogs deserve a second chance.
when somebody dies unexpectedly and there is no one to care for the dog it may end up in rescue or if someone became seriously ill and could not care for their dog.
Dobermann rescue have dobes needing good homes and there are some in other rescue centres
and there are so many people who breed with the sole intention of making money they do not know anything about dogs and they do not care about dogs
hearing dogs for deaf people and other assistance dogs have often come from rescue organisations these dogs have to be 100 per cent reliable
Every puppy is a potential rescue dog.
If someone has young children I would never advise getting a rescue where you don’t know the dog’s history and what bad experiences it may have had in the past. All rescue dogs are not angels, those that end up in rescue are those bred by people who have not bothered with health tests or worried about temperament before breeding. Not the dog’s fault obviously but rescue dogs need special care and not everyone is equipped to provide that.
I won’t apologise for buying my purebred dogs from knowledgable, responsible breeders! At the same time I have nothing but admiration for those who do provide stable homes for rescue dogs and try to sort out their problems.
I wouldn’t dream of supporting a breeder when there are so many dogs in rescue to choose from.
How can breeding more dogs be seen as acceptable when ones without homes are being killed everyday
Definitely rescue. People will have bad experiences with dogs from rescues and breeders. So many people buy a pup and then end up with a dog with behavioural problems when their adults. At least if you go to a good rescue you know exactly what your getting when you take on an assessed adult dog.
If breeders really cared they’d spend all their time saving their chosen breed from being destroyed cause they can’t find homes instead of adding more dogs to the crisis.
Yes people have the right to choose. I choose not to support breeders when homeless dogs are being destroyed.
