I have a bit of a dilemma. Nova is an 8 year old APBT Puppy Mill rescue. As you can imagine, she was kept in cramped conditions and is now terrified of going into small, closed spaces.

I’ve found that I absolutely can not leave her home alone as she takes her stress out on my carpets, couches, cabinets and trash cans. I tried introducing an open crate to her, but she came within 2 feet and ********.
I don’t want to put her outside (its getting VERY cold) and I can’t leave her inside my apartment without being crated or she’ll tear the whole of my house up and ingest something that could harm her.
What can I do to get her to trust the crate?

Place treats and food closer and closer to the crate so she will learn it’s a good place, it will take time though. I toy or two will also help. Always talk happy and be very up when near or touching the crate.
Feed in the crate. Put the bowl in the back. If she wants to eat, she has to go in.
Do NOT give in. Make that the ONLY place she recieves food, treats, etc. If she really enjoys toys, that is where she gets those too.
Make the crate the thing that provides her with the things she wants and needs.
Add: Also, is it a wire crate, or a plastic one? If its a plastic one, I would remove the top of it while you are there, so she gets used to entering the crate, but is not so enclosed. Once she freely enters to eat and such, try putting the top back on.

What about just putting a gate up to keep her confined but not in a little crate. Or maybe get a very large kennel that won’t scare her, or even making your own. Wow this is a tough one! Good luck.

Everybody basically said what I would have said about getting her used to the crate. I have a mill rescue too…but she had an easier turnaround as she was rescued at 1.5 years.
Just another suggestion- can you X-pen her or use a baby gate in the kitchen or bathroom for the time being, or will she jump/knock it down?
I have also found, a BIG WIRE crate (biggest one they make) seems to help the comfort level….at least with my girl. Good luck

You can purchase a gate and contain her in the kitchen with her toys,bed and even a piece of clothing with your scent on it.
If you have a big enough bathroom for her to rest comfortably in without being caged it may work.
Mill dogs take alot of extra work and patience.We have some that have spent 6 yrs. living in cages.It is the last thig they would wish to be confined in.
Also try taking the door off of the crate placing some of her items in.One day the animal may choose to investigate find it a safe area rather than a prison.
Crating will emotionally set this animal back.
Any friends or neighbors who can assist watching the dog.The very last thing a mill dog wants is to be isolated as well.
Before placing this animal with you-all of these issues should have been disclosed.Shame on them if they failed you and the animal.

Does your animal permit touch,do okay with new sounds or other animals? Most are very fear based many crave just sitting on your lap.
Does your type of work permit you to bring your pooch along?Some circumstances do.

Voor de eerste terwijl, ik de deur open zou verlaten en enkel haar het zou laten onderzoeken. Langzaam, she' D brengt een weinig meer tijd daarin door, en ik geef haar traktaties wanneer she' s daarin.
kunt u een groter krat bouwen? ik weet sommige kratten kunnen apart komen, misschien als u een andere bovenkant en kant aan het vastmaakt, het groter zal kijken?

ik had een reddingshond zodra wie fundamenteel het zelfde probleem (niet van een molen een niettemin, enkel idioot) zodat had ik de voorzijde nam en het krat terugtrek toen ik (verliet enkel de kanten en naar huis de bovenkant) en dagelijks zou ik haar dichter en dichtere voedselschotel duwen, tot zij met haar binnen hoofd at. dan i' D werpt binnen traktaties en negeert het enkel allen. nadat zij I wasn' zag; t dat haar gaat dichterbij komen, she' D gang door het. zodra zij comfortabele slaap daarin was, terug zette ik één kant aan. na een tijdje terug zette ik de deurkant aan. een paar later maanden, kon ik de deur, maar niet sluiten zonder haar een koekje te geven. nochtans, tijdens desensibilisatie, bracht ik haar slechts voor een paar notulen aan tegelijkertijd. het werd beter…
mijn fiancee' s de honden zijn autokerkhofhonden. (goed, zijn al onze honden autokerkhofhonden) maar werd gebruikt aan buiten het zijn, moesten wij een bout doornemen de vloer en hem ketenen aan het. (omdat hij meer dan 100 pond was, versterkten wij de vloer en de daksparren daar)
hij werd beter ook, zodra hij zijn manieren leerde, maar het was taai voor een tijdje. hij at alles. de muren, versiering, meubilair, countertops, u noemen het.
