If you worked in a Vets or Animal Rescue Centre – Would you take on a dedicated 14 yr old volunteer?

Misfit82 asked:

My daugher wants to work with animals, she has been advised now is the time to start volunteer work in a rescue centre or vets, once she has a couple of years weekend volunteering work under her belt she can apply to the local Zoo Park near us.

We are in Kent in the UK, she hasn’t had a job before but wants to eventually move into becoming an animal specialist, (Big cats 1st choice, Gorrillas 2nd choice) Any advice would be great.

Keep it clean she is 14 and my daughter who will want to read any replies!

Thank You

ive worked at our local humane society for about 5 yrs and I know they take on younger volunteers but they have limited jobs they can do but most places will take on younger volunteers

I wish I lived in the UK and worked in a vets office. I would bring her in immediately. I was 13 when I first worked w/a vet. I loved it!!. Good Luck to her!!!!

In the U.S. most animal shelters will take on a 14 year old as long as she has her parents permission. Find a local shelter near you and see what requirements they have. Good Luck.

i doubt vets will take her on as most dont take on work experience kids. there is alot of medicines in a vets and its not worth the risk to leave a child with them.

i did work experience at my local RSPCA center and it really changed my mind about working with animals as a career.

you could try at your local center she will have to have an interview, and she might not even like it.

If I had a rescue centre I would seriously consider her. I hope she fulfills her dreams

I worked an animal shelter in Denver, Colorado for a few years. They had a lot of teenage volunteers. Most of them were more dedicated to the cause than some of the paid employees. She should go for it and follow her dream. Good luck!

its a difficult age 14!in my experience i would take her on a weekend basis, but you often find once they meet boys etc the whole thing changes.but be carefull lots of places exploit the teenage workers.i would suggest she goes to college and takes some animal husbandry courses[if thats what they are called now]xxgood luck
