Try practicing it on em over and over again. Give it a treat if he does well. Soon enough he will get the point .

Remember, Practice Makes Perfect !!!

Proof the dog on his standard recall. Then introduce the whistle when you call him. Blow it as soon as he is definately running to you.

Reward him when he gets back and let him run free again. He will soon associate the whistle with coming back. After a short while, blow the whistle then call him. Repeat for a short time.

He will soon start running towards you when he hears the whistle before you have time to call!

Make sure you reward every time.

Use Pavlov's theory. Blow a whistle every time that you feed the dog. Sometimes prepare his meal without him knowing ie when he is out in the garden. Blow the whistle and put the food down as he enters the house (or wherever you feed him)
You have to be consistant with this and only use the whistle sparingly when you are out followed by a tasty titbit when he comes to you. Use his name very sparingly too as this will then become an 'attention' command. A bit like Fido! Yes, Dad. What do you want? Fido Come. Always follow the name with a command.

Good Luck and well done for taking on a rescue!

You know the little snacks or biscuits it likes. Call the dog, blow the whistle as quick as possible, give the treat. Always show a little patience. It may learn the 1st day or the 3rd, doesn't matter. It'll work.

Blow the whistle whenever you feed him. He'll get to associate whistle with treats.
Be sure to carry a biscuits or whatever whenever he returns to the whistle. I taught my cats that a whistle meant food time and they come running.

I will be honest, i have never done this, but i would go about it this way:
Once the dog has settled in and has proven to come when called, I would blow the whistle and then call the dog. I would give a tasty treat when the dog came.
Soon the dog would not wait for me to say come... he would come on the whistle.
I would then drop the verbel and go with the whistle. I would probly go to not using the treats everytime after about a month, but i may never cut them out completely. Keep the pooch excited about coming for the whistle.

Hope this helps and gives at least some ideas.
