get lots of experience in a dog rescue – whereabouts are you?
Could look at fostering now as well for either your local rspca or rescue centre.
Might also be good to work for a charity for a while (voluntary) or do a course in fundraising, as it is often very difficult to raise the money to fund operations etc.
The most difficult thing can be finding premises. Due to new EU legislation, you need to apply for a change of use for the land from whatever it is now to a dog rescue (if in uk that is!). Which is proving nightmare for many rescues – several have had to close down because local councils are taking the opportunity to get rid of laces that they feel lower the tone of the area – even though they are the ones clearing up the mess left by a selfish and careless society! (sorry – rant!)
The most important thing though is experience, particularly within a shelter already active. Most are always after volunteers who have a clue (rather than youth offenders and 13 year olds on work experience who won’t do anything!) and if you’re reliable and keen to learn, you can find out everything you need to know in a few years.
Good luck – there are so many dogs out there, and so few people willing to help them.
If you want to talk about it further, feel free to email. or i might be able to hook her up with someone in the area if you’re in UK, as know quite a lot of the rescues around the country.
