local newspaper, maybe a card in a couple of shop windows.
i’d love to rehome him for you, but the ‘rents don’t want a dog :(

Sorry that you have come across a situation that you have to rehome your dog,you must be so gutted.

Are you in England or scotland?
England have the r.s.p.c.a,dogs trust, blue cross, battersea dog home
Or scotland we have the sspca, dogs trust, second chance many more.
They will not put the dog to sleep will vet anyone thats interested in your dog.

Edit: we dont have Kill shelters here in the U.K!

Why can’t you take the dog with you? I hope you don’t get a new one at your new house…you don’t ever deserve another dog. I moved houses with all of my pets-dogs-2 at the time and cats-10 at the time.

    (And my hamster!)

Freecycle is one way, but be extra cautious about who takes him. Some people look for ‘free’ pets and use them as dog fight training victims.

Contact your animal shelters, dog rescue groups (they’re listed online or your vets would know about them), anything local to you.

You can’t take the dog with you? Why? He should be a permanent part of the family.

OMG please make sure he goes to a good home. at least you are being responsible by looking for a home for himand not dumping him somewhere. i would take him – where do you live?

PLEASE try to keep your dog! It is so hard for them to be put in a shelter and what if nobody wants them? first try to keep it, then try and see if a friend or family member wants to have it, then…..if you have no other options, i guess you will have to bring it to an animal shelther. BUT make sure that they do not put their dogs to sleep!

    Newspapers, Shop windows.

I’m sure you will anyway, but its best to do a home check on people who want to take your dog, just so you can make sure its going to a suitable home and family environment

Don’t advertise him for all and sundry to peruse over. He’s worth better than that.

Ask friends, family and neighbours if anyone is willing to take him. Get friendly with other dog walkers at your local park. At least you’ll know who will be taking him and personal recommendation will make sure he goes to a good home.

Try pet shop windows, newsagents etc. But I beg of you, please check the home the dog goes to first. You hear such horror stories.
Maybe you could ask the RSPCA or your local VET for suggestions.
You did not say how old your dog was, just remember as well
he may also fret after you.

Don’t get a pet in future if you keep moving house, it isn’t fair and you are being cruel.

I agree with jojojo, but try to visit the home of prospective adoptees, so you can get an idea if they will look after him right. Maybe you could arrange to phone them occasionally just to check up on him. I adopted a dog from a elderly couple, and used to phone them and send them pics of him, so they we reassured that he was well cared for. Good luck!

If your dog is a purebred, try the breed specific rescue for that breed – they will know what sort of home is suitable. If he came from a reputable breeder, they should be willing to help with rehoming even if they can’t take him back immediately.
If he’s a cross breed, whatever you do don’t advertise him as free to a good home – you have no idea where he will end up.
Advertise him in your local vet and pet shop and put to approved home only and make sure you vet prospective owners thoroughly.
Edit: If he’s an Elkhound, you should let the breeder know first, then contact Elkhound Rescue:
Rehoming is usually done by word of mouth in numerically small breeds like the Elkhound

hi from dan.. is he a pedagree..? if so; and you have papers, go to a web site percifcly related to that breed, if not get intouch with the RSPCA and ask for advice.. it is sad to have to give up your pet.. im with you on that one take care from dan..

I think this has already been suggested but go through family and friends as a first resort, at least if you manage to rehome him that way you’ll know where he is you’ll be able to check in on him from time to time.

I would only use the shelter idea as a last resort, we absolutely DO have kill shelters in the UK and although he may start in a no kill shelter these poor dogs are often shunted around and may well end up in a shelter who DO put to sleep after a certain amount of time.

    Whatever you decide, good luck.

How can you abandon your dog.?

Obvs. moving house is more important . . if so, why did you get a dog in the first place.!

    I **** **** dog owners.!

next time, don’t get a dog save it for someone who WON’T abandon it.!!!

  • sarah b

why cant you take your dog with you

  • Dani M

    local paper
    gumtree
    ebay etc

  • kazbaznrian

Id never move to a house that i cant take my animals too….maybe you just dont want the dog on your new carpets?

  • Moe

Please for your dogs sake go through a trustworthy rescue. You could offer to foster him until the rescue finds him the right home.

Is there no way you can take him with you? or wait until you find a property that allows pets?

  • dorothy s

You should have done your homework before you bought your dog. If you are moving house, you should ensure that there is suitable accommodation for your dog. If you think that you have a disposable commodity, how can you expect someone else to love him. It’s obvious that you don’t. I am sure that you will give further details to make you appear less hard hearted, however there is no excuse for dumping your dog.
