ARFIUS ARF asked:
I have just got a rescue dog, she is a black greyhound. She has a 3 letter and 1 number reference tattoo inside her ear. Can I find out her history from this? We have no other previous knowledge to the dog so the tattoo is the only clue. Anyone know?

you can only find out who previously owned it
The tatoo is just for identification. She was raised in a kennel and they don’t always know all their names….so they use tatoos.
I think that in Australia, Greyhounds have tattoos in both ears.
You can contact the Greyhound racing authority in your area for information as they have a record of all racing greyhounds by their tattoo. However, they are not likely to give you a huge amount of information due to privacy legislation. Any legitimate pound or shelter that obtained the dog as a stray would have notified the owner if possible and given them the option of claiming the animal. I guess if they were contactable and wanted the dog then it wouldn’t have been adopted out.
Good on you for adopting a Greyhound, unfortunately they are often very hard to rehome from a shelter both because of their lean looks and because they have a reputation as a energetic, speedy dog, while they like to run occasionally they are generally gentle couch potatos the rest of the time.
This might help:
i dont think so, because its like an id chip. Try contacting the geyhound ass, they maybe able to help you. Or the rescue centre i would of thought they could point you in the right dirrection.
If she was raced in the US she would have tattoos in both ears. In that case, all you have to do is read both tattoos, contact the National Greyhound Association with the numbers they will tell you who she is.
Then you can go on the Greyhound Data website and look her name up and her race record and full pedigree should be there.
Not all Greyhounds end up racing – some do not have the right stuff to run. Good luck in your search!
One caution: while checking out racing forms is harmless – do check with the rescue about any contact with owners or trainers – occasionally this is misinterpreted and can endanger future adoption prospects…
the adoption group should know if this is a problem with that owner….
You can use the tattoos in the ears to find racing history, relatives, etc.. at greyhound-data.com.
Type her info into the link below. It should come up with a name for you. If there is a letter that is not clear you can type in the wildcard *. If you need further help, edit your post and I will see what I can do for you.
