I Have Puppy Problems?

puppy rescue
Keeping it simple asked:

Hey
well yesterday i rescued this puppy from a dog pound near by. the lady wasnt quite sure how old it was but she reckons he´s 4 weeks. she needed the space and so i took the puppy. i didnt want to take it away from its foster mum that soon but i felt i had to because they kill the pups after a certain time if they dont find homes for them.
so i got home with my new pup and it became very attached to me.
i couldnt put it down with out it running to my legs.
then night time came and i set up a small box with a blanket and put it next to my bed. he went in and slept but every 30 mins/hour he would wake up for the toilet and howl really loud. id go and see whats wrong and then he´d wag his tail and stop. but he´d start again everytime i went back to bed. i had a really restless night last night.
ive been looking for a puppy for a while and now ive found one and im really happy but i really dont know what to do about the separation anxiety.
he had diorrea all night as well. im not sure if its because he only got fed his foster mums milk in the pound.
the lady at the pound said she had found him and his 3 brothers on the street next to his dead mum and dad. so i take it he is afraid of being on his own because it brings back those memories.
but now he is only ever quiet when im holding him. and i cant be holding him all the time.
is it to young to train him? and how do i stop the separation anxiety?

treat it as you would your baby, you took on the role as a mom.give it a month

well, if the pup is 4 weeks then it would not even be weaned.
you need to bring the pup to a vet to assess its age (i can’t tell over the internet with no pictures) and ask the vet how to best care for it.

He’s not crying from traumatic memories. He’s just simply too young to be away from his mother. The youngest age a pup should be taken from its mother is 6 weeks, but 8 weeks is recommended. You should talk to a vet to make sure he’s ok physically and to find out how you should be caring for him.

4 weeks is way to young for much of anything. He missed out on his mother’s guidance on how to be a puppy and the security he should have felt with her. He probably sees you as his mother. He also missed alot of bonding time he should have had with his brothers and sisters. With that said, at least your trying and you want to save him. But you’d have to be up for it, and have lots of patience. I’d wait a few weeks before trying obedience training. He’s just too young to understand yet.

4 weeks is MUCH TOO YOUNG to be separated from its mother and siblings! (COULD YOU MEAN 4 MONTHS??) They should still be nursing! What kind of a pound would release him that soon? He will have dog socialization issues later because he was not brought up by his pack. He should have been left with his siblings until at LEAST 7 WEEKS, if not until 12 WEEKS.

First thing, he could be having diarrhea because he is infested with worms or other gut infections. Take him to the vet Immediately. Worms can be passed on to you. The vet can tell you what to do in terms of caring for him.

You need to by a crate and crate train him. A crate is like a den for a dog. They will not **** in their crate because they consider it their bedroom. It is also a safe place to keep him out of trouble when you are away. He is so young, you are going to have to consult your vet about how often he needs to be let out during the night. He is not old enough to be in his crate all night yet.

He will need a lot of shots too, and flea prevention and heart worm med later. Get him to a vet.

If he was being fed by a lactating bitc*h in the pound then she was the surrogate mother not a foster mother. There is a difference between the two.
The pound should be reported for allowing a 4 week old puppy to be adopted. That’s against the law in most places.

This puppy really needs to be fed every few hours. He’s probably waking up so often because he is hungry. He also needs company.
4 week old puppies need to be with their mother and this poor little thing is missing out on so much by not having its mother and litter mates to keep him warm. This is why he wants to be with you all the time, he is seeking the warmth and comfort. Puppies know their very survival depends on being together and with their mother.

You have a job ahead of you to turn this pup into a confident dog.

Make sure the pup is eating solid food. If not it may still need to nurse to get nourishment.

If so, you can feed it puppy milk replacer with a bottle. It’s sold at pet stores.

Puppies also sleep close to their other litter mates and mother. The puppy likely misses this comfort.

A hot water bottle and a ticking clock to simulate a heart beat put in his bed, sometimes helps. Make sure the hot water bottle is not too hot. Don’t use a heating pad as they can overheat. Wrap the water bottle in a towel.

Howling is a vocal call that they use as a way to attempt to assemble the pack.

    Your pup is likely lonely

Separation anxiety can result from suffering a traumatic experience, such as a major earthquake or becoming lost in unfamiliar surroundings. Sometimes the death of a person or another pet in the household can trigger the onset. In many cases, no single event causes it–some breeds are simply genetically predisposed.

This isn’t separation anxiety, this is a baby puppy who should by rights still be with his dam and his siblings. So, having rescued him, it’s down to you to replace them. This is going to be loads of work and is going to involve far more than one interrupted night. But before you do anything, I would have him checked out by your vet to see what the ‘diarrhoea’ is all about. It’s a sad fact that this little lad could well be very sick. Hopefully not.

At this age he will be barely weaned, if at all. He will need bottling probably at least every 4 hours and your vet will be able to let you have some b itch replacement milk – or you can use warmed goats milk which is the closest to b itch milk.

I have to ask why the pound let you take him without giving you more advice about how best to rear this wee puppy if you are inexperienced. Please go back and talk to the pound, or better yet, go speak to your vet and have him checked out at the same time.

    Good luck.

4 weeks is so young. He needs to be fed puppy food softened with milk for now until his teeth get stronger and he gets used to solid food. Get a hot water bottle or a heating pad for his box for him to curl up with. I personally would bring him into bed with me at night, but that’s not for everyone.
