Common sense would dictate that you would ask these questions while talking to the actual DOG RESCUE CENTER…not a bunch of random people on Y/A.
Pay rates are different from shelter to shelter, so are your work responsibilities and the criteria for being hired…Duh?
Most work is done by volunteers, so you will be paid nothing. Usually you have to be at least 15 to volunteer, sometimes older. You would do things like walk and play with the dogs, bathe them, feed them, clean out the kennels, and help people looking to adopt.
Phone the rescue centre you’re interested in working at. Ages, roles, etc., vary from shelter to shelter.
You will not be paid for doing voluntary work. Shelters are non-profit organizations and just do not have the money to pay volunteers. If you want a paid job there, you will most probably have to have some sort of prior experience in animal care and possibly relevent qualifications as well.
Jobs roles vary from management to cage-cleaners.
i cant say how much you will be paid but i expect its a low wage as lots of people vounteer to do these kinds of job.
i expect you will have to be 16 or older.
the job entails
cleaning the dog runs out twice a day – some can be very smelly
feeding the dogs – some have set diets so you have to be careful
exersizing the dogs – can be hard work as most of the dogs are not well trained
showing potential owners the dogs and finding the right dog for the right owner – this can be very hard most of the time as so many people dont want the dog you know is right for them
sometimes you will see cases of abuse and neglect. this is the worse thing.
i suguest you try to get some work experience in the local rescue centre. even if it jus 1 day a week.
I work in a dog rescue centre. One of the saturday girls is 15, but my boss likes to take on slightly older people usually. The wage is of course minimum wage, they are charity funded after all. One benefit is finishing at 4 as you start earlier, so there is still some of the day left when you get home.
The basic job role is this: Cleaning cleaning cleaning. There is a lot of poo involved, wellies are a must! The walking and training of dogs is mainly down to the volunteer dog walkers. As a kennel maid your main role is to feed and clean the little creatures
There is also a lot of interaction with the public, introducing them to dogs and assessing if they will be suitable owners. Sadly a lot of the people who come up are time wasters, that can be demoralising. They also quite often have crazy expectations in their new dog, which naturally most rescue centre dogs don’t meet. Or they all want the pretty ones, whether or not they have a nice temperament.
It is a hard job, extremely physically demanding, cold, wet.Added to that is the stress of being surrounded by sad and distressed dogs. But it is of course rewarding when the dogs finally get their new homes, and I take pleasure in enriching the dogs lives as much as I can while they are there. Whether it is just cuddles or taking a huge vat of chicken and pasta in to add to their meals occasionally. Recently two of our dogs that had been there for two years got rehomed in time for christmas
I am glad I am doing it, but physically I won’t be able to do it forever.
It is a very sought after job, so if you are serious about doing it do some voluntary work first so you have some experience to show potential employers in the future.
Goodluck!
this site might give you a bit of an idea what is involved
i have done work experience a few times at cheshire dogs home, i am telling you it can be hard work at times, as you would have to clean all the kennels a few times a day, feeding and providing dogs with water, washing all the dogs bedding, washing all the food bowels, as well as taking the dogs for a walk whihc can be a real challenge, then their is the customer side of things aswell, ensuring that the dogs go to a suitable home, and the general maintenance. it maybe hard work but it is also rewarding as you will get to see the dogs go to a new home and its even better when you see the dogs you like the best gets a home, it brings a tear to your eye sometimes.
i am not sure of the age you would have to be, and the pay can vary.
i would suggest you contact your local centre, and have a chat with them, see if you can do some volunteer work/ work experiance with them,, then you can find out what is involved and see if it is the right job for you.
to increase your chances of getting a job in a rescue centre i would recommend in taking a course in animal care/management, by doing this you will gain more skills and knowledge about all sorts of animal not just dogs and you can open your options more. here is a site for you
this is a college i have been to you will get the best hands on experience with animals ranging from dogs, rabbit, rodents, birds, and zoo animals such as tapir, capybara, meerkats, ring tailed lemurs etc. you will also get a good knowledge on a variety of subjects too.
hope this helps xx please contact for any more info.
