    i’m not sure exactly how they started but they are extremely old.. my boyfriend is a history/poli sci/ and philosphy major and he told me that child welfare of a form of it actually sprang out of humane societies… can you believe that lolol….

    Not sure, I do know that ****** loved the animals though. People all over the world would take in helpless animals ever since they learnt what an animal was (not cavemen for example) and I suppose the real animal lovers made their home into a shelter.

    I think that every community always seems to have a person who takes in ‘waifs and strays’, albeit the usual ‘mad’ old cat lady :)

    Rescue centres, as we know them today probably originated at around the same time as the creation of the charity commission. This allowed people to form charities which had certain public and financial assistance or advantages.

    Our charity – The New Arc – or to give it its full title The North East Wildlife Animal Rescue Centre, started two and a half years ago.
    During that time we have handled nearly three thousand animals and birds. We currently have over five hundred animals in our care.

    Like most rescue centres we began more or less by accident, realising that wildlife in particular had a ‘bad deal’. The simple fact is that most wildlife injuries attended to by vets are put down unless they can be sorted and released immediately, because they have no facilities to offer for the animals to recuperate. We had some ground spare and wished to put it to good use.

    I believe that Battersea Cat and Dogs home was one of the first ‘animal welfare’ centres which rescued animals and became an ‘organisation’ for their care. Perhaps you can find out more from their web site?
