it’s either she doesn’t want to go or your forcing her.
Try luring her with food. It might just be enough to get her feet moving. You could also try finding out what is making her stop. Is she afraid of the leash? If so, have hear wear it around the house and just drag it on the floor. Is she afraid of something else? Try to pinpoint what is making her stop walking.
Was it used for a deaf/blind person? May explain it if it’s looking out for any obstacles or dangers
I don’t think it’s a rescue dog thing because me dog used to do it all the time, she just couldn’t be bothered to go for a walk! She would always try and run back home too. I don’t think my dog is scared of the road, but that may be a factor for the rescue dog that makes it feel slightly more nervous. Maybe your mum could drive to a nearby park/common and take her for a walk there, she may prefer it.
our dog is exactly the same but she is not a rescue dog but a puppy. We think it is before the surroundings are new or she is tired but we are not sure but i don’t think it is just rescue dogs.
Funny – we have had bassets that did that – shoulder down would go no further – one was a rescue one wasn’t.
I don’t think it is a rescue thing particularly – it seems just to be the dogs way of saying NO.
Is it always after a long walk? Or as she is turning back to home? Maybe when near a specific place?
With one of our Bassets (the rescue) it was when we tried to take him for a walk when he KNEW my mum was in the house – he would not leave without her. If she wasn’t around he would happily toddle off with us.
The other used to get to a certain stage in the walk (usually after 3 miles or so) then just decide enough was enough and would start to take the route home. He often ended up walking further that way!
Have you tried the canny collar? It is for dogs who are either pulling or behaving strangely while walking. I’ve used one for over a year on a golden retriever and he used to lie down, then pull. Took him to training classes and they let us borrow one to try. Worked a treat. Either that or look for a ringcraft or obedience class and go along just for socialisation. A decent ringcraft don’t care whether your dog is the next champion or a family pet. They’ll also teach you how to get them walking properly. Canny collars are online.

I used to work with rescue greyhounds and lurchers and had so many problems with this. The best way I found to get them over it is by trotting with the dog on lead and making encouraging sounds (like the ones you use to coax horses forwards). They concentrate more on you and get excited about what’s going on. I found it worked with even the most nervy dogs so if it doesn’t succeed at first, just keep persisting and make higher pitched, encouraging sounds. It’s most likely a result of abuse or just not used to being on a lead. Good luck, I know how upsetting and frustrating it can be.
