2 1/2 weeks ago I got a 7 yr old staffie from a dog rescue centre?

dog rescue
Uchimataman asked:

He is the most lovable affectionate dog. Great with people, house trained loves kids. Loves going in the car. Only 1 problem. Although I keep him on a lead, any other dog that comes up to him he attacks very aggresively. I know my fear could be causing it, but I’m too scared to let him off the lead in case he runs at another dog.
Any suggestions?

Couldn’t find your question. Not sure I wanted to. What a horrible person you must be!

You first need to have him evaluated by a professional behaviorist. This is either dog aggression or a lack of socialization. I wouldn’t ever trust him completely off of a lead in a situation where he can get at another animal, exercise caution, and if worst comes to worst, muzzle him in public.

perhaps a training lead would help – so he does not feel so threatened – and if he does run, you still have hold of him – agree with the answer above – use a muzzle as a precaution

Noting like good old character assassination !!! So pray tell…who teaches the dogs to know whether the live in a big mansion, a two up / two down or a council estate, or do the dogs just make a wild guess ? where you are born, where you grew up or currently live has no bearing on dog ownership, so don’t pigeon hole people on council estate’s (or their dogs) BTW I do not live on a council estate but I would have no worries about doing so !

i suppose being in a rescue centre he maybe only got a short walk every day as they had other dogs to look after as well or maybe he was attacked by another dog when he was younger do you know anything about his background where he came from how he was rescued etc you need to speak to the vet to rule out any underlying medical cause if there isn’t then it could be a behavioural problem and he would need to be referred to an animal behaviourist

Well…I’ve seen Victoria Stillwell deal with this on several occasions….her solution is..when there is another dog coming towards you turn your dog and walk the other way..get his attention put him in a sit stay and treat him……by giving him chicken..and make him sit until the other dog passes..then continue with your walk. Soon he’ll associate the fact that there’s another dog, with getting a treat….soon you should be able to allow him to go near other dogs without him attacking them. and your right….alot of it is your anxiety. He senses your fear and that makes him uncomfortable.

don’t let him off the lead, he’s obviously been trained to fight

  • f100_supersabre

He simply does NOT want any other dog in his space.
Possibly, he is worried that you might ‘trade him in’ and he would ‘lose’ you. (insecurity problem.) After all, you did get him from a rescue center, which means he has probably ‘lost’ at least one other owner.

Our dog (had him since he showed up here 7 years ago,) is friendly away from home, but will NOT tolerate other dogs on HIS property.

    Try going to training classes.

At 7 years old a dog’s personality is pretty well developed so I don’t think you are going to change him now. Remember, Staffordshire Bull Terriers were bred as fighting dogs, it’s the natural thing for him to attack other dogs. A muzzle at all times when outside the home is essential. It’s possible that, with a lot of patience and advice, you will be able to train him to walk quietly to heel and ignore other dogs, but you both need to go to classes. Has he had the snip? This often quietens a dog. When you feel more confident, he will probably become more stable. Good luck to you both, Staffies are lovely people dogs.

Dogs can’t be humanized (in response to other responses) Dogs live in the moment and you need to be his Leader. Contact a trainer…a REAL trainer not a cookie pusher. Cookie pushers work for easy dogs but an aggressive dog needs real leadership. In the wild, pack leaders keep the followers stable with body language and growls they dont give the followers treats. good luck, he CAN be turned around with the right consistancy

Maybe you haven’t read the question I posted last night.

Have it put down, as they are horrible nasty aggressive dogs.
Wondering why I am thinking like this?? find my question, and read it, and you will find out why!!!!

Here trev, just for you. read it and weep!!!!.;_ylv=3?qid=20080915184346AAJ2UOr
I adore dogs, but with the exception of staffies, pitbulls, and all other vicious killing machines. I pity anyone walking their dog whilst your vicious thug is around.
The world would be a nicer place WITHOUT bully breeds, and the specific type of people who choose to own them.
I bet YOU live on a council estate too??
Pitbulls, staffies, , and similar breeds, The poor man’s ***** extention!!!

You may want to seek help from a good trainer who can help you to find a solution, keep him on a lead as he may not have been socialised adequately around other dogs.

A trainer can be found from the following link

Some rescue centres have their own trainers? have you discussed the problem with them?
