Training Your Puppy

I hope you’re ready to enjoy a fun experience. To become a team, you and your puppy will have to learn a few of the basic skills. Your puppy will have to be molded into the type of dog that you want him to become. An important step to bring peace into your house is to begin training your puppy.

The Reward System

The reward system is the most positive method of training. Finding the right treat for you puppy should be fairly simple. One treat that has worked well for many top trainers is little cut up pieces of hot dogs. A lot of praise and love is another reward that should be freely given.  In order for it to stay fun for you and your puppy, stay upbeat and positive.

The Training

Your puppy will learn to sit, down and heel as these are three basic commands. Once your puppy learns these commands you will have much better control over him.  When you have a well trained puppy, socializing him to different situations will become much easier. The attention span of a puppy is not very long so keep the training sessions to around 10 to 15 minutes. As the puppy learns and grows, the training sessions can get a little longer.

Leash Training

With the leash in one hand and a treat in the other, you are ready to begin with the leash training.  In an upbeat voice, say the puppies name and give the heel command.  As your puppy is walking beside you, begin giving him the food and lots of encouragement. If the puppy should stop, just continue to hold the treat in front of him and gently tug the leash.  The puppy will eventually become accustomed to the leash and collar.

Teaching The Sit

The best way to get a puppy to sit is to hold the treat in front of his nose and then gently lift it over his head. Every time you practice this, use the word sit. Whether you are watching TV or doing dishes, the sit is one of the things that can be taught right then and there.

The Down

While the pup is in the sit position, slowly lower the treat and then bring it forward. When you begin to lower the food down, always give the down command.

Patience and consistency will be required to train your puppy. Whether they pick it up pretty fast or if things seem to be going a little slow, just keep on going. What we’re after is for the puppy to do these things with all verbal commands. Results will show up and it won’t seem like it took that long. All will be well when the puppy is trained.
