Jessica 501 asked:
I have a female dog who is 2 and recently aquired a male dog (they were both found on the street, along with the westie and 2 cats I have too). My female came into season and my male was all over her. They managed to do the deed, bottom to bottom which apparently is the only successful way for them to breed. I panicked and called the vet who said it was unlikely she could become pregnant whilst she was bleeding. She had been bleeding for around 7 days at the time. To be sure we have kept them apart for the last 10 days and she has now stopped bleeding. I was told that after the bleeding stops is the time when male dogs will knock down the door to get to her, but my male doesn’t seem bothered anymore. Could she be pregnant? With 3 rescue dogs and 2 rescue cats (money ran out to get them done, but I am saving up) I cannot have anymore animals. What should I do?
The westie wee’s the bed nearly everynight and won’t do a thing I say. She is also terminally ill (this has nothing to do with the weeing which is pure naughtiness) but if your mum still wants her she is welcome! I joke she is my little one, in a house of giant dogs and is like a portable hot water bottle in the winter months!

kill the dog
she could be have her checked again although a vet should know you can get free or cheep castration/ neutering from the rspca or some local councils do it ie contact the dog warden about this especially if you are on benefits
wanna sell the westie…kidding…my mom has been searching for one of those!!
But seriously all you can do is wait now
If they tied than she is more than likey pregnant. Most of my dog tie when the female is still bleeding (I am a dog breeder) and ALL have resulted in confirmed pregnancy. I recommend finding a new vet.
Also if you don’t want her to have pups take her to a vet (not the 1st one you went to) and have her spayed and they will take the pups at the same time. If you can’t afford it there are many places who will do it for a reduced fee of $25 some will do it free. Call your humane society and ask about the low cost spaying.
Wait 3 months and you will definitely know for sure.
I agree with the vet, it is unlikely that she is pregnant if she was bleeding at the time. The fact that the male is not interested at the moment does not necessarily mean she is pregnant, as not enough time has passed for her hormones etc to have changed enough for the male to sense if she is pregnant.
I hope things work out ok for you.
Well doctors aren’t always right and that includes vets. Plus he said that it was unlikely not impossible so wait till her season comes back around if she doesn’t have a season i think you know what that means
well it is possible that she could be pregnent.normally a ***** only becomes receptive when she has stopped bleeding and during 11th-13th day of her season.matings have and do occur earlia though.whichever way you look at it your vet wont be able to tell if she was pregnent untill she was 4weeks gone.if you are still worried and feel you really would’nt be able to cope ask the vet to give her an injection to abort the pups and keep saving to spay her, without her spayed it will only happen again.good luck.
worst thing to do is panick relax and she will be more relaxed anyway yes vets can be wrong as i have had 1 of my bulldog bitches back from previous owner who tried to mate her sneakily with another bulldog anyway she was scanned by a vet who said in his report that she had no pups but that wasnt the case ive had her bak 6 days she had 1 pup late tues night and its a little girl and she is very healthy uasully the ovulation is aruond 9 to 14 days but sum bitches vary some as late as 18 days and some as little as 4 days i would sit tight around her 61 to 65 day to date of the moment you caght them tied but wether she is or wether she isnt she wil still be abitt hormonal regards allan let us no how she goes
If the vet said she’s not she’s not.
It’s entirely possible that she is pregnant. Every female is different, and you can’t depend on the number of days she’s been in season or whether she is bleeding or not to determine the liklihood of pregnancy. If the male was able to mate her successfully, it is likely that she was ready to concieve.
However, if you have her spayed soon then you won’t have to worry about puppies. The spay will cost less than raising a litter.
And find a vet who is more knowledgeable……
Well Jessica it looks like time will tell wheather or not your f/male dog is pregnant.
It is still worth keeping the dog away until the 3 weeks (21 days) period of entrous cycle has expired just dont take any chances.
The fertile period can last for about 5 days and may begin approx., nine to ten days after the start of heat.
But fertine periods may vary.
I hope things work out for you and I am sure it will to but let me know by email how things go it is hard and I understand for you – you are an animial lover and a nice kind person you deserve to do well.
If a ***** is prepared to let a dog mate her then she is normally ready. normally it is a bit later than 7 days but it may be possible that she came on a little earlier and did a good job of concealing it. Bitches can also get in pup without the bottom to bottom tie especially when you dont want it to happen. 2 of my bitches have also bled for a full 3 weeks.
A ***** can be injected the day following mating – a bit like the morning after pill – to terminate a pregnancy but she will start her cycle all over again and can not be re injected in the same season.
Get a new vet! ask about a blood test to tell if she is pregnant he will advise when so at least you will know before the time arrives!!
There is also the possibility that she has a phantam pregnancy and grow large and develop milk, make nests and collect toys but no babies.
Seek help from the PDSA or some of the local animal charities who may help with the cost of spaying/castration if you are on benefits. The best time to have a bitsh done is half way between the two seasons -ie about 3 months when hormones are most level and believe me it is cheaper in the end than rearing puppies and finding responsible homes for them let alone the cost of any unespected complications.
I see one answerer,s reply states a dog could not tell if she was in pup yet some dogs have an uncanny knack of knowing just when the time is right but you have done the responsible thing to keep them apart. I do think she would have eased off bleeding earlier if the mating was successfull
AsIi say get a new vet who cares a bit more, if you have escaped this time get some help with spaying next time may not be so lucky.
good luck let us know the outcome.
If the male mounted on her the first time of her heat. I dont think she is pregant. Your gonna have to go to the vet to know for sure if she is or not.
I wouldnt worry about it. But still take in it to consideration that she could be pregant.
You should get her neutered now. If you can’t afford it contact your local animal welfare charity and come to some arrangement with them.
Whether she is pregnant or not you cannot care properly for all these animals and for her own welfare she should not be allowed to breed.
A pregnant ***** can be neutered in the early stages of pregnancy.
I am concerned that you have ‘found’ all these animals ‘on the street’. They should have been turned into the local pound or resuce centre for a period so that their owners could find them. If you had done so the rescue centre would then have neutered them before rehoming them. Please bear this in mind next time you find an animal on the street!
Hi i have known a dog to become pregnant when they have tied and she has bled. You could book her in for a spey and termination at the same time so you wouldn’t have this problem again. If that is not what you want to do then count 9 weeks from when they locked and get whelping box ready away from other animals. Good luck
Bleeding in bitches is typically associated with pro-oestrus – the bit before she is in heat proper. This means that its before she’s ovulated, so commen sense would tell you that fertilisation is unlikely. It also takes the oocyte a few days to mature after ovulation.
BUT – it sounds like your ***** is near the end of pro-oestrus if she’s accepting the dog, and dog ***** is viable in the tract for at least two days. So its a possibility. Your vet did say that it was unlikely, but possible and I’d have to agree with him.
If you can’t afford more animals, your best bet is to go to your vet and ask for advice – its possible to terminate pregnancies at an early stage. Pregnancy diagnosis in the ***** is normally done at 4 weeks, when the conceptusus are palpable through the abdomen as long as your ***** isn’t fat or very nervous.
